Why put up with business nonsense?

Q. A recent tragedy I experienced has changed my outlook at work. I look around my workplace at the backstabbing and senseless uproar, and I think, "Life is too short to put up with a mean-spirited and petty environment where the devious folks get the glory." I think I want a career change.

Do you meet a lot of people who feel this way?

A. We don't know the numbers, but you are not unique.

We get to talk to a lot of people from a lot of organizations, and some of them report that the work environment has become more negative, ruthless, and selfish in recent years.  This, as the PR department cranks out stories about what a team-based love-fest everyone is having.  This is NOT universal, but a significant number.

Surveys come out from time to time saying many people would like to do something different. Some people feel they are on a treadmill, getting insufficient or inappropriate recognition. They would like to earn honest feedback from work that benefits other people.

As we age, it's natural to occasionally reflect on our own mortality, along with what is really important. However, avoid making a hasty decision.

If there is any way you can improve the atmosphere in your own organization, think of how that would help others! It is quite likely that other people feel just as you do.

Consult a physician to make sure you aren't clinically depressed. Also, a member of the clergy can provide a good sounding board.

Are you knocking yourself out trying to win the approval of persons who will never give it? If so, try to convince yourself to stop worrying about it! (Yes, this is difficult, because the urge for approval comes from a non-logical part of our heads.)

Take the time you deserve to plan ahead. Set confidential, personal goals that YOU think are worthwhile.

Attraction to the future is a healthier force than repulsion from the present.
