Why give others (outside departments) some sales or finance training?

Q. Why should non-accountants receive financial training, or non-salespeople receive sales training?

A. Increasing numbers of companies share internal financial data with members of the organization.

But, this effort is wasted (or even harmful) when employees misinterpret the information!

At the same time, increasing numbers of employees are expected to interact well with customers, understand the "voice of the customer," and be creatively responsive to customers.

Yet, these employees are NOT accountants or sales specialists!

Thirty years ago, who cared if these individuals understood accruals, or how to listen to a customer?  Back then, few non-specialists participated outside their own specialty.  Today, it is commonplace.

We think companies are better off when their members understand their companies' financial goals and reporting, and how to contribute to the care of their customers.
