How do I recover from an instructor who predicted failure?

Q. I enrolled in a college course as a working adult and on the first night, the instructor growled, "This course is tough; half of you will not make it!  Look around; most of you will flunk out by mid-term!"

I was so intimidated I dropped the course. Any advice?

A. Your instructor needs to stop watching old war movies, and switch to decaf coffee!

You had an unfortunate experience. If this event didn't happen very long ago, let the dean of the school know about it.

You need to reinforce your self-confidence and remember that ordinary, average people do make it through college, hard courses and all. If you can find a different instructor for this course, you might talk to him or her before you enroll to reduce your anxiety.

Most instructors want students to succeed to the maximum of their abilities.
