Instructor and Consultant Spotlight:

W. Harrison Goodenow

Corporate Training Partners spotlights industrial manager, trainer, and consultant Bill Goodenow, president of Goodenow and Associates

About W. Harrison Goodenow:

Bill Goodenow has 40 plus years of experience in quality, manufacturing and education.  His industrial background includes:

  • Chemical processes

  • R&D project management

  • Computerized factory information systems

  • Food processing

  • Electro-mechanical assembly

  • Automotive parts manufacturing

  • A broad range of QC/QA management responsibilities

His teaching experience includes courses in Total Quality Management and applied statistics at the community college level.  Bill has been associated with the President of Corporate Training Partners for over fifteen years.  He is an ASQ-Certified Quality Engineer (76-Ret.) and Certified Auditor (97-Ret.), and was an examiner for three years with the Wisconsin Forward Award (WFA) program.  The WFA is Wisconsin’s adoption of the Baldrige National Quality Award.

Since retiring from daily corporate life, Bill has remained active speaking, consulting, writing, and pursuing his second career, professional photography!

Specific Areas of Expertise:

Baldrige National Quality Award:

Experience with the Wisconsin Forward Award provides an intimate understanding of the Baldrige Criteria, Core Values and cross-cutting themes that impact the application process.  Bill's main focus has been on a strategic approach to self-assessment that will enable more organizations to benefit from the Baldrige process than has been previously possible.

Strategic Planning:

Hoshin Kanri, Policy Deployment, or Management by Planning are different names for a particular type of strategic planning that is noted for its ability to create linkage and alignment within and among an organization’s mission, vision, strategic goals and operational tactics at all levels of the enterprise.  Although Strategic Planning is the 2nd Criteria of the Baldrige Award, the Baldrige process does not prescribe any specific approach to the planning process.  Bill's focus is on helping the client make strategic planning an integral and effective part of a total management process.

Blackbelt Performance without Six Sigma:

An approach to TQM called 5.999 Sigma is based on the streamlined (but not watered down) form of Strategic Planning briefly described above.  In addition, 5.999 Sigma uses a special approach to SPC called Real Process Control (RPCÒ ), as well as Deming’s approach to Industrial DOE (Design of Experiments) called Analytic Studies.

Real Process Control™:

RPCÒ is a novel and very effective approach to control charting which enables the user to identify those process variables which may actually be causing out of control product variation.  It does this through the use of a special charting tool known as the Dual Tracking System Ô .

Analytic Studies:

Bill has been a long-term advocate and practitioner of Deming’s approach to DOE for industrial experimentation.  Whereas traditional statistics are perfectly all right for Enumerative (static type) Studies, the use of ANOVA and other tests of statistical significance are of little value in predicting how an industrial process will behave in the future.  Deming’s Analytic Studies overcomes this problem through specific Experimental Design planning, execution, analysis and interpretation techniques.

Training and Coaching:

Experience in script writing, role playing model development, and organizational linkage and alignment of training to specific corporate goals creates the ability to more effectively tie training to bottom line performance improvement.

Photographic Documentation:

As part of a total approach, Bill has done 35mm and digital stills of employees and equipment in action, including leadership and associate portraits, improvement teams, training sessions, and facility highlights suitable for Annual Reports, special purpose brochures, and training manuals.  Bill has also written and produced custom video productions for training purposes.
