Regardless how many victims precede them, the non-believers persist!

The Non-Believers

It’s both amazing and unbelievable how supposedly learned individuals seek out trouble and undue risk!  They court danger despite numerous warnings and prior victims documenting the fate that awaits the reckless.

Vivid examples of this constantly make the media.  They range from swimmers who have no fear of swimming in shark infested waters (who subsequently learn how sharks can be bad for one’s health!), to care-free bikers who shun helmets, to business people who don’t believe that operations and internal information (especially theirs) would be coveted or targeted by others.  They are the true Executive Ostriches!

The non-believers think that bugging devices, the spying business, eavesdroppers, and corporate espionage, are strictly Hollywood fiction, for the entertainment of the masses.

When life teaches these poor souls the truth behind their naïve, seriously-flawed logic, their limited understanding of the losses they visited upon themselves (and those around them) leaves them befuddled and confused.  They become an example of how NOT to conduct business.

Even after being victimized, many still refuse to accept the facts as they happened!

Their disbelief notwithstanding, non-believers DO play a vital role in espionage activity!  Without them, you see, many a spy would have to work much harder at his or her trade to be successful!  Let’s see how:

In every illicit field of endeavor, there exist two key players:

[a] The Perpetrator(s), and

[b] The Facilitator(s) –

(The Victim is a given!)

The Perpetrators are of course the highest priority ones to watch out for. They’re the ones who initiate or cause the problems, and who help inaugurate those who are unprepared or unprotected into the ranks of "Victim"! The Perpetrators’ ranks are growing at an unprecedented rate.

The Facilitators are those who knowingly or unknowingly (i.e., as paid helpers, or simply by being credulous and naïve), help the Perpetrators successfully execute their illicit, surreptitious operations.

"Non-Believers" are almost always in the ranks of Facilitators. These individuals simply don’t believe that there could be bad people in the world who "spy" on others for their own personal gain. They also believe that in any case, they could never become victims of such ridiculous, naughty activity -- even if it did exist!

Non-believers can easily be sold the rights to bridges and swampland -- and quite often are! They help keep many a con man in wealth and luxury, including corporate spies! They help thwart, or even completely negate, company security programs, from within.

Thus, due to their total lack of awareness (or deliberate complicity), non-believing Facilitators pose a serious risk to the security of others and the firms that employ them. They are true friends to the Perpetrators! The demise of many a firm is a direct result of a Facilitator.

We have seen first hand, in both past and present assignments, just how truly damaging Facilitators can be to the well-being of their fellow employees and employers.  We have the following sage advice to today’s security directors and managers:

PROMPTLY FIND YOUR NON-BELIEVERS AND FACILITATORS WHEREVER THEY ARE IN YOUR FIRM, AND EDUCATE AND CONVERT THEM.  OTHERWISE, BE PREPARED TO ACCEPT THE EVENTUAL RUINATION OF YOUR FIRM.

Today’s aggressive business environment cannot tolerate the added liabilities and baggage that careless types can foist upon the firms they exist in. The careless and the naïve are sought after and exploited, especially by the professional spy, who realizes how they notably increase his or her success rates.

Most veteran security professionals are already familiar with Non-Believers and Facilitators.  (Those who are not - soon will be!)

Are your current security programs able to detect and address these types of individuals? Are you sure you do not currently have careless, naïve individuals in sensitive, trusted, critical positions within your own firm?

Don’t you agree that if you do have such persons in your employ -- it would be prudent to promptly correct their flawed concepts?
