Ultra Hal responds more
quickly to your remarks if you have a bigger, faster computer (conversation
response time is typically 1 to 5 seconds using a 700 MHz computer, and is
proportionally faster with higher-speed computers).
If you want to hear the
audio voice, you need a sound card and speakers on your computer.
NOTE: Only proceed
to download if you understand how to make folders, download files, unzip files, and install
software. If you are a beginner, obtain help from an advanced computer
user whom you trust. Don't perform actions that you don't understand or feel comfortable
doing!
If you wish to download
the free version of the program, follow the following steps:
1. Make a folder
named "UltraHal" on your PC, into which you can download the
installation file.
(The name of the folder doesn't actually matter, but
you need to easily find the folder and file after you download.)
2. Click
on the link below, and save the file to your folder. If you are
using a slow dial-up connection, this 20 MB download could take approximately 90
minutes.
(It may download faster if you download late
at night or early in the morning when the
internet is less busy. Some computers have "auto-disconnect"
enabled, which hangs up after 30 minutes -- if so, you must de-select that
function. If you've had troubles in the past with large
downloads, you might benefit from one of the free "download manager"
programs available on the web from several providers.)

The
file is in the "zip" format. Your computer may already have
software to "unzip" the file inside the "Ultra Hal" folder;
otherwise, unzip it after it downloads, with a program such as
WinZip .
Unzipping the file creates a "read
me" file in plain-text format, and a "setup.exe" file that is the
install program for Ultra Hal.
3. Once you have the
"setup.exe" file in the folder on your computer:
a. Restart
your computer or close any other applications that may be running, so your RAM
isn't occupied with other programs.
b. Temporarily disable any anti-virus program.
(You should immediately re-enable your anti-virus program after Ultra Hal has
been installed; if you have any doubts about the safety of this or any other
file that you ever download, "virus scan" the file before installation, and do a complete "system scan"
of your computer after your installation is up and running.)
c. Click
start -- run -- browse, to find and open the "setup.exe" file.
(Make sure you select the correct "setup.exe" file, which you put in
the "UltraHal" folder! Almost all software from all companies use
files called "setup.exe", so it's easy to select the wrong one!)
The usual type of Windows "Install" screen will start, and give you instructions to complete the
installation, which only takes a few minutes.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
The free version has
limited e-mail support from Zabaware, Inc., at info@zabaware.com
UltraHal runs fine on the
vast majority of computers. If UltraHal won't run, the most likely causes
are:
1. Bad / corrupted
download file
2. Older, smaller,
slower computer with insufficient RAM or drive space
3. Highly fragmented
or too-full hard drive
4. Too-full or
too-busy RAM (from too many programs running or loading at startup)
5. Pre-existing
hardware or software conflicts
Zabaware has provided
uninstall support to remove the software if you ever decide you don't want
it. (To remove, go to start/ settings/ control panel/ add-remove software,
and select "UltraHal.")
You are welcome to copy
the "setup.exe" file to a disk and share it with any computers owned
by anyone, since it is the free version. If you do this, first make sure it's
a good, functional download!
We definitely recommend keeping
the original download file in a folder named "UltraHal," so you remember which program it is.
Keep in mind that this
product comes under the terms and conditions of Zabaware, Inc. We've
tested it on various desktop and laptop machines without any problems, and
hundreds of thousands of people have downloaded this product over the past five
years. However, we've
heard of a small percentage of computers on which it simply won't work, for the
reasons listed above.

Enhanced version for
purchase:
The enhanced version of
UltraHal has all the features of the free version, along with many additional
characters, plus added features such as voice recognition (the computer recognizes your voice via your
microphone) in addition to the speech synthesis (the computer talks to you through
your speakers). The features of the enhanced version are more
sophisticated, and the animated characters are more detailed.
We recommend trying the
free version first. The enhanced version is a much larger file. We recommend
that purchasers obtain the CD-ROM
that Zabaware offers.
